Ingredients
- 2 pounds of ground round
- 1 tbsp. Worchestershire sauce
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 4 Hamburger Buns
The Dry Rub
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground caraway seeds
The Stuffing
- 1 tbsp. butter
- 3/4 cup thin sliced onions
- 2 tbsp. steak sauce (A-1, etc.)
- 2/3 cup grated cheese
- 1 tsp. prepared horseradish
- 1 tsp. ground caraway seeds
Directions
Mix the hamburger meat, Worchestershire sauce, salt, and pepper together and form into 8 patties, about 4 inches in diameter. Make the patties fairly thin, because we’re going to combine them into 4 patties when we add in our stuffing.
To make the stuffing, first heat the butter in a small skillet and saute the onions until they are limp and well cooked. Transfer the onions and butter into a small bowl and add the steak sauce, cheese, and the other stuffing ingredients and mix well.
To assemble the burgers, spoon the stuffing onto 4 of the hamburger patties. Now, top each of these patties with the remaining (plain) patties, then pinch them shut around the edges, sealing well.
Using a little extra steak sauce, coat the the hamburger patties with a light layer of sauce. (It helps to just use your hands for this job. Mix all of the dry rub ingredients together and sprinkle evenly over both sides of the patties. Let them come to room temperature, and we are ready to cook! You can cook these either in a smoker (250° for about an hour) or in a regular grill over indirect heat.
