@Dave C. you realize that the mod that you stated cost as much or more as the Smokenator 1000 with a whole heck of a lot more work involved.

Looks cool but not really needed, I find that the weber slow smokes all meats just fine indirectly and with water between the coal piles. now I have built a mod for one of my 5 weber grills that works awsome! I found that the kettle grill lid fits perfectly on top of most 55 gal drums, I cut a drum at the lower third stiffening ring which created a flange along the bottom. This allowes the barrel to sit on the bottom portion of the kettle, keeping the original "one-touch" air vent. Then cut the top of the barrel (lid) leaving 1/2" lip, this alowes the 22.5"grilling grate to fit perfectly on the lip. Now I can pile a large amount of lump charcoal directly on botton grate. I added another shelf just above the coals for water and presto, probably the best smoker I have ever used! It also has a small hinged door I cut into the barrel that allows the addition of wood chips. now this may seem like alot of work for some but it's real and well worth it. and a heck of alot cheaper than a Big Green Egg.
