The Big Easy – “Oilless” Fryer
Tue, Dec 4, 2007
Charbroil has sent me on of their new Big Easy Oilless Fryers to try out. They call it an oilless fryer, but it’s basically an infrared grill designed for turkeys and large roasts. The idea is that it produces the same basic results as a fryer, juicy meat and a crisp screen, without the mess and risk of a deep fryer.
It looks, nor accidentally I’m sure, like a deep fryer. It’s even got a “cage” to hold the turkey. Along the bottom is an 18,000 BTU infra-red burner that heats things up to about 360 degrees (perfect turkey roasting temperature). It’s a ring, so it should produce even heating. It’s like a rotisserie in many respects, but doesn’t need to spin.
It sure is simpler and safer then frying, that’s for sure. Pretty much drop the meat inside and turn it on. I bet this thing would work well with a leg of lamb or a prime rib as well. One big plus is that you can load it up with marinade and it’s not going to be diluted by oil or slung out by the rotisserie.
I’ll be firing up the test unit in the next few weeks and I’ll report back on my findings.

Don’t bother with testing. I have one of these things, and let me tell you, I will not go back to the oil Fryer. This thing is the greatest thing since the Microwave. I loved it so well; I went out and purchased the Infrared Grill, the big one with the fancy stuff on it. I love it too. You do have to get use to the different method of grilling.
How long does it take to fry a turkey in the oil less turkey fryer. A 16 pound turkey,I want to know in hours not per lbs.
Bought my Oilless fryer last night and cooked an 18 lb bird this morning. It took 2 hours and 40 minutes, so roughly 9 minutes per lb. I use creole butter and creole garlic by cajun injector. half of each bottle mixed and shot it up last night. I lightly rubbed the whole turkey with olive oil and then some cajun seasoning. My office staff ate the whole thing and said it was the best turkey I ever fried. Must admit I thought it was good myself. I usually fry 3 turkeys at Thanksgiving and 3 at Christmas. I spend about $60 on oil. By this time next year it will be paid for in oil savings. BTW I saw a recipe for a boston butt. If that is comparable to the turkey, this baby was money extra well spent!!
A friend of mine bought one this weekend and we tried it out with a turkey Saturday. Two hours and forty minutes and the 15 pound bird was done to perfection.I have never had a juicier or better tasting turkey.Sunday morning I ordered my cooker online.Sunday afternoon we cooked chickens and ribs in his.Done to perfection again. This is the best cooking device that I have ever encountered and cleanup takes about 5-10 minutes.
Have the fryer and love it. We have done 3 turkeys, 2 hams, 3 fresh pork shoulders,Beef roast, 2 hens, link sausage, boston butt, we have not cooked anything that was not good. Just make sure you do tem. instead of time. We find turkey does best to 190 deghrees, perfect every time. In our grooup we have bought 11 at last count
