BBQ Cookbooks
Modern Grilling Cookbook
Vermont Castings’ Modern Grilling contains over 300 recipes for the appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts that are among the most popular with today’s food-savvy consumers. In addition to traditional BBQ fare such as beef, pork, and poultry, Vermont Castings’ Modern Grilling contains contemporary favorites such as grilled pizzas, paninis, pastas, and wraps. The book explores modern grilling trends, such as cooking with smoked wood, vegetarian grilling, and unique flavor pairings, and includes more than 200 full-color photos.
It’s got one of the best sections for grilled pizzas that I have ever seen. Lots and lots of variety. This is not a how to grill book. Sure, it’s got some tips and basic introduction to choosing a grill and so forth, but it’s main purpose in life is the recipes. It’s a great book to pick up for less than $20.

The Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn
Patrick Bosley from the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn dropped me a line to tell me that his new cookbook, “Family Favorites From Moonlite“, is now available from Amazon.com.
The Bosley Family has been serving award winning hickory-smoked barbecue, home-style vegetables and Blue Ribbon Desserts for four generations at the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn in Owensboro, Kentucky. In a time of fast food and chains, the family owned Moonlite has become renowned for its food; featured in USA Today, the New York Times, Gourmet Magazine, Southern Living, The Travel Channel, The Food Network, and more.
Complied and edited by Patrick Bosley, Moonlite’s cookbook is a collection of family recipes that founded a Kentucky tradition. From Burgoo Soup and Banana Pudding, to Barbecue and Vegetables, This cookbook is full of recipes for just plain good food.
Patrick Bosley is the youngest grandson of Pappy and Catherine Bosley. It was Pappy and Catherine who made the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn into a Kentucky Tradition from a 30 seat roadside stand back in 1963, to the 350 seat world famous restaurant before they passed away. Patrick Bosley is the Third Generation to contribute to Moonlite’s success, literally growing up working at the Moonlite, He still works there today with several other family members.

Free grilling guide for women

According to a recent National Pork Board survey of more than 1,000 women, six out of every 10 women are handling the grilling duties at home at least once a month.
To inspire women (and girly men I guess) to get grilling, the board is offering a free booklet, “Grill Power! A Girl’s Guide to Grilling.” It features a grilling guide with times and temperatures along with other tips and five (not surprisingly) pork oriented recipes.
A note to the fellows however, if you can get paste the obnoxious loopy loopy font, the unicorns, rainbows, and so forth there is actually some pretty good recipes in here. It also hits the highlites on basic grilling.
For a free copy, you can just download the PDF. Or, if you are reading this from 1985, send a self-addressed mailing label to: “Girl Power! A Girl’s Guide to Grilling,” National Pork Board, P.O. Box 9114, Des Moines, IA 50306.
More pork propaganda can be found at their fanciful, website www.theotherwhitemeat.com.

Some tips from the BBQ Queens
SCMZZZZZZZ.jpg” alt=“The BBQ Queens\’ Big Book of Barbecue” />BBQ has in large been dominated by men. Now however, Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, self proclaimed BBQ Queens, have written a new book, The BBQ Queen’s Big Book of Barbecue, that will put man a grill King to shame. I think we can learn a thing or two from these gals:
“Men have one wowie dish,” Fertig says, basing her conclusion on years of observation. “They rarely plan a meal or prep any of the other dishes.” When Adler and Fertig cook outdoors, they prepare every course on the grill.
The pair share some tips and recipes from their new book.

How to Grill by Steven Raichlen
SCMZZZZZZZ.jpg” alt=“How to Grill: The Complete Illustrated Book of Barbecue Techniques” />
How to Grill is one of the best selling books on the subject, and a must-have if you are new to grilling or moving up from hamburgers to more exotic grilled fare. It’s cheap, pretty, and full of useful tips and recipes. It walks you through the basic techniques required to prepare each dish, with full color photos provided of each project.
The recipes are for the most part within reach of most grillers, and not so complicated or full of hard to find ingredients as to discourage the casual chef. Even established backyard cooks will find this a good book to have on their shelf, especially given that it can usually be found for less than $15.

The Barbecue! Bible by Steven Raichlen
SCMZZZZZZZ.jpg” alt=“The Barbecue! Bible” />
The The Barbecue! Bible is a pretty good book to have in your collection, especially if you are wondering where to go next in your grilling career. It’s big, thick, and reasonably priced. Almost 600 pages and over 500 recipes. My only complaint is that many of the recipies are fairly complicated, some with dozens of ingredients. Never the less, there are some tasty morsels in here, and the sheer volume and diversity of the recipes is inspiring. Some of my favorites include:
- Jamaican Jerk Pork Tenderloin
- Plantation Shrimp
- Grilled Grits
- Piri-Piri Chicken
- Grilled Margherita Pizza
