Grilled some plums tonight. Nothing fancy, but they sure were good. Heat the grill to medium or medium high heat, and prepare the plums. I first slice them down the center, and remove the pit. Then brush lightly on both sides with a little molasses. Place cut side down on the grill till the fruit [...]

What’s in a name…

Barbecue competitions encourage creativity, and it starts with the team names themselves. In fact, it appears that a clever name is second only to owning a smoker as a requirement to enter at many contests. Of course, there’s always the potential embarrassment of showing up to the showdown with the same name as another team. [...]

It’s gotta be the shoes…

As well all know, the one true measure of someone’s skill in any particular area is how much equipment they own. Barbecue is no exception. That’s why I can’t imagine any real barbecue master not owning a pair of these babys. Cowboy boots or sneakers just won’t cut it these days down at the VFW [...]

Try Char Crust rub for the perfect char

If like me you like your steaks charred on the outside and pink and juicy on the inside, I suggest you try out the Char Crust rub. It’s been around forever, originating in a Chicago steakhouse in the 1950′s. It gives your steaks (and chickens as well) a delicious crusty exterior every time. It comes [...]

Another nod for chimney starters

Awhile ago I wrote about the benefits of using a chimney starter instead of lighter fluid for starting your fire. Over at the BBQ Junkie you’ll find another vote for this method. Seems like they agree. It’s fast, easy, and convenient. It also uses no chemicals, and when paired with lump charcoal creates about as [...]

Recipe: Flat Iron Steak Martini

Cooking.com and The Texas Beef Council bring us this unusual recipe. I’m not sure what to make of it. It’s a cocktail, no wait its an appetizer. Kinda scary. Somehow I don’t see cowboys sipping, er chewing, these around the campfire. It looks kinda foo-foo, yet strangely compelling. It starts with a medium-rare flat iron [...]

Tailgate barbecue destroys 6 cars

The smoldering coals of a tailgate barbecue ignited a fire that destroyed six vehicles in the parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium during a Charger’s game. The blaze also damaged four other nearby vehicles. Shortly after kickoff of the exhibition game between the Chargers and the St. Louis Rams, the hot coals of a barbecue left [...]

OLN’s Iron Chefs of barbecue

I finally got around to watching a couple of episodes of the Outdoor Life Network’s new series “The All-Star BBQ Showdown” which have been beckoning from the Tivo for the past couple of weeks. Maybe I’m just a big barbecue nerd, but I really enjoyed it. It’s basically Iron Chef barbecue without the funny costumes.

A computerized barbecue for high-tech rednecks

If you think I’m a nerd for blogging about barbecue, you have to check out this excerpt from the ExtremeTech book, Geek House, published by Wiley Publishing. In this project a couple of hardware hackers hack a barbecue pit with computer sensors and a DC fan in order to automate the 10-16 hours process of [...]

QVC pushing mail order barbecue ribs

I stumbled across a segment on home shopping channel QVC the other day where the item up for sale was Corky’s BBQ Ribs. They were laying it on pretty thick, and I don’t mean the barbecue sauce. I thought this was pretty unusual fair for a company that normally sells excercise equipment and breadmakers. They [...]
